CBP confiscates firearms and ammunition at Texas border crossing

On December 3, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Laredo port of entry in Texas confiscated multiple firearms, magazines, and ammunition from a vehicle attempting to cross into Mexico.

CBP reported that on November 2, officers targeted a 2025 Toyota Tacoma pickup for inspection. The truck, along with its trailer, was traveling over the Juarez-Lincoln Bridge, one of four crossings in Texas connecting the United States and Mexico across the Rio Grande. Both the truck and trailer underwent a non-intrusive inspection system scan and a canine inspection.

The checks uncovered a total of 11 handguns, 10 magazines, a pistol grip, and 21 rounds of ammunition of various calibers, concealed among other items inside the trailer.

Laredo Port Director Alberto Flores emphasized the importance of the seizure, stating that the action demonstrates the officers commitment to CBPs mission of securing the border and protecting local communities.

Data from a 2023 Government Accountability Office report highlights the reliance of Mexican authorities on U.S. enforcement to prevent firearms from crossing the border and to curb the northbound flow of Mexican-produced drugs. The report noted that between 2014 and 2018, around 70% of firearms confiscated in Mexico were traced back to the United States.

Analysis: Cross-Border Firearms Seizures Highlight Ongoing Challenges

The recent seizure at the Laredo port of entry illustrates the persistent challenges in controlling the flow of firearms from the U.S. into Mexico. The interception of 11 handguns, multiple magazines, and ammunition underscores the continued use of commercial vehicles and trailers to transport concealed weapons across the border.

CBP’s use of non-intrusive inspection systems and canine units demonstrates the agency's reliance on both technology and trained personnel to identify contraband. Such operations remain critical, given that a significant portion of firearms recovered in Mexico—approximately 70% according to a 2023 GAO report—originates from the United States.

The incident also reinforces the strategic importance of ports like the Juarez-Lincoln Bridge in Texas. Effective enforcement at these crossings not only protects local communities but also supports broader bilateral efforts to curb arms trafficking and its connection to drug-related violence in Mexico.
