Centenarian to illuminate town's Christmas lights

A 100-year-old resident has expressed her delight at being chosen to turn on the Christmas lights in her hometown.

Ena Bowley will lead the festive celebration in her cherished Banbury this Sunday, from 11:00 to 18:00 GMT.

The centenarian will be stationed outside Banbury Town Hall on Bridge Street, the very place where she was born in 1925. Despite the weather, she insists she will attend, proudly sporting a "festive red coat."

"Banbury was a quiet and charming town in my youth, and our family was deeply involved in the community," Ms Bowley recalled. Her father served as the town hall keeper and mace bearer, and their home was connected to the hall. One of her earliest memories includes watching her brother ride a toy truck around the hall.

During her teenage years, she remembers the town being filled with tanks and American soldiers during World War Two. She also mentioned having an American boyfriend at the time, with whom she kept in touch until his passing.

Ms Bowley attributes her long life to close friendships and a love of dancing. "After losing my husband Robert, who was a wonderful dancer, I thought I would never dance again. But my friends encouraged me, and I still enjoy ballroom dancing every week," she said.

"I consider myself lucky to have such supportive friends. I stay active and youthful, though my legs occasionally remind me of my age," she added.

Councillor Kieron Mallon, Mayor of Banbury, stated that the town chooses someone who has contributed significantly to the community for the light-switching honor. "Ena Bowley is the perfect choice to illuminate our Christmas lights," he said.
