Two Vietnamese nationals have been sentenced in the UK after being found guilty of organizing illegal small-boat crossings from Europe, exploiting digital platforms to move undocumented migrants and endangering lives while generating significant profits.

Two Vietnamese nationals have been sentenced following a joint investigation by French and British authorities that uncovered their involvement in organizing illegal small-boat crossings into the United Kingdom. The defendants facilitated the movement of undocumented migrants from Europe to Britain, using digital platforms to reach potential travelers.

Defendants and Their Backgrounds

Hoang My Tra Nguyen, 25, originally from Croydon, was identified as one of the key organizers. She lived on Heathfield Road and became involved in arranging clandestine boat journeys. Alongside her, Hop Cahn Nguyen, based in Leicester, promoted routes for Vietnamese migrants seeking to enter the UK. The pair arranged multiple crossings, including incidents in January and July 2023. Their operations were eventually disrupted, leading to their arrest by the National Crime Agency (NCA) in April 2024.

During court proceedings in Croydon in August 2024, both Nguyen and Hoang admitted to coordinating illegal travel for undocumented individuals. Hop Cahn Nguyen received a 12-year prison sentence, while Hoang My Tra Nguyen was sentenced to 15 years, reflecting the gravity of their offenses.

Methods of Operation

The NCA investigation revealed that the defendants used multiple Facebook accounts and collaborated with a third man, currently awaiting extradition to France. Their online presence included videos of small-boat crossings and displayed UK mobile numbers to facilitate travel arrangements. The digital networks they created promoted multiple routes to Britain, offering migrants connections to further transport after their initial arrival.

Authorities determined that the duo coordinated with third parties to manage migrants’ movement once immigration claims were processed. Their operations involved sustained surveillance and careful planning, with Hop Cahn Nguyen actively guiding arrivals along clandestine routes. In February, British Transport Police intercepted a crossing that the pair had arranged, halting a transit of migrants traveling from the Channel.

Evidence Collected

Following their arrest in April 2024, law enforcement seized numerous mobile phones, SIM cards, and ledgers detailing the names, payments, and travel routes of those involved. These records provided crucial evidence of the systematic organization of illegal crossings and the financial scale of the operations.

Saju Sasikumar, Branch Commander at the NCA, stated that the defendants exploited low prices and urgency to entice vulnerable individuals seeking a new life in the UK. Hilary Ryan, representing the Crown, emphasized that the investigation revealed a complex operation that generated substantial financial gain while endangering the lives of migrants. The sentences imposed reflect both the scale of the criminal activity and the threat it posed to border security.
