A former private school teacher has been officially barred from teaching after sending inappropriate messages to a sixth form student. This ruling was issued by the Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) following a thorough investigation into the teacher’s conduct.
Details of the Misconduct
James Samson, 46, previously employed at Luckley House School in Wokingham, Berkshire, was found to have requested the student’s phone number and communicated with her outside school hours, including during holidays. The TRA examined WhatsApp messages exchanged between November 2023 and May 2024.
The messages included suggestive remarks, one of which implied inappropriate familiarity and was accompanied by a winking emoji. Communications were sent late at night, during weekends, and on public holidays including Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve. The full correspondence covered 41 pages, revealing a sustained pattern of unprofessional contact.
School Response
Luckley House School, which charges over £45,000 annually for boarding students, confirmed full cooperation with the investigation and immediate action. Samson, who served as head of geography and form tutor, was dismissed in July 2024. The school stated that its response was guided by the best interests and safeguarding of children.
TRA Findings
The TRA panel determined that Samson’s behavior was highly inappropriate and fell well below the professional standards expected of teachers. A separate allegation concerning sexual motivation was investigated but was not substantiated.
Consequences
Following the TRA decision, Samson is banned from teaching in any school, sixth form college, relevant youth accommodation, or children’s home in England. He may apply to lift the prohibition starting 1 April 2028.
