Eli Manning expressed gratitude toward his older brother Cooper Manning, who, according to Eli, "always got in trouble," which allowed Eli a bit more freedom growing up. Speaking with PEOPLE about their new family advertisement for the New York Times subscription, Eli, 44, shared how Cooper, 51, helped soften their parents' rules during their childhood.
"I was always thankful for Coop coming before me because he constantly found himself in trouble, so by the time I came along, our parents were much more relaxed about the rules," Eli explained.
Their father, Archie Manning, described Cooper as "always a funny little boy" who had a knack for making people laugh.
Cooper, in turn, spoke about his relationship with Eli, saying, "I don't think I've ever had an argument with Eli in my entire life. We just never exchange harsh words, which is rare for someone you've known for 44 years."
He added with a smile, "Of course, well probably get into a big fight right after this interview."
Eli and Cooper are also brothers to former Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning. Cooper noted that while they share a sense of humor, their personalities are distinct. "I think our parents appreciate that we each have unique traits," he said.
Reflecting on their family dynamics, Cooper shared, "We enjoy teasing each other and others, and were not shy about taking it in return. We all have a similar wiring, but the older you get, the sharper the edges tend to be."
Today, the Manning brothers live in different parts of the country, making family gatherings less frequent. Cooper resides in New Orleans with their parents, Archie, 76, and Olivia, 72. Eli lives in Summit, New Jersey, with his wife Abby and their four children, while Peyton and his family are based in Denver, Colorado.
Commentary: Eli Manning Reflects on the Impact of Older Brother Cooper
In a recent interview, Eli Manning expressed his gratitude towards his older brother, Cooper, crediting him with helping ease the strictness of their parents' rules during their childhood. According to Eli, Cooper’s frequent run-ins with trouble allowed him more freedom as a child. This reflection provides an interesting glimpse into the dynamics of the Manning family and how the brothers’ personalities shaped their upbringing.
The Manning brothers, despite their fame and success, seem to share a unique bond characterized by humor and mutual respect. Eli’s acknowledgment of Cooper's role in creating a more relaxed household environment is not just a fond memory but a testament to how sibling dynamics can influence family relationships. As Eli noted, by the time he came along, their parents had already loosened up on the rules, thanks in part to Cooper's earlier misadventures.
Cooper, for his part, highlighted the rare absence of conflict between him and Eli, noting that they’ve never had a serious argument in over four decades. This sibling harmony stands in contrast to the often tumultuous relationships seen in many families. While the brothers’ personalities are different, as Cooper explained, they share a strong sense of humor that binds them together. This, in turn, is a key factor in how their parents have come to appreciate the distinctiveness of each child, despite the natural rivalry that comes with siblinghood.
However, as with all families, the passage of time has made it more difficult for the Manning brothers to gather as frequently. With Eli residing in New Jersey, Cooper in New Orleans, and Peyton in Denver, family reunions are now less common. Yet, the enduring connection between the Manning siblings remains, a reminder of the lasting power of family ties, regardless of distance or time.
