After relocating to the U.K. last year, Ellen DeGeneres and her wife Portia de Rossi are reportedly planning a return to the United States. While some sources suggest their visit may be limited to the holiday season to escape the cold Cotswolds winter, there are indications that de Rossi may want to resume her acting career, leaving the duration of their stay uncertain.
Homes Sold, Options Pending
The couple previously sold off their U.S. properties, which means they may either purchase a new home or stay in temporary accommodations such as a hotel or Airbnb during their return. Earlier this year, they listed their Montecito estate for $29.9 million, followed by another property priced at approximately $5 million.
Reasons for Leaving the U.K.
DeGeneres and de Rossi initially moved to the British countryside to escape the political climate in the U.S., particularly after Donald Trump's election. However, sources suggest they now miss their friends and prefer Californias warmer weather. A friend close to the couple noted, Ellen was clear that they are coming back to California sooner rather than later. They miss the warm weather and their friends.
Holiday Visit or Longer Stay?
While some reports suggest a short-term return for the holidays, the couples plans remain flexible. DeGeneres has expressed that while she initially intended to remain in the U.K. throughout Trumps presidency, her stance has shifted. Portia de Rossis desire to pursue acting projects in the U.S. may also influence the length of their stay.
The UK Home and Lifestyle
During their time in England, the couple lived in a hilltop mansion in Oxfordshire with enough space for de Rossis horses, which was a key factor in choosing the location. DeGeneres explained, When we decided to live here full-time, we knew that Portia couldn't live without her horses. We needed a home that had a horse facility and pastures for them.
Professional Challenges in the U.S.
Before their move to the U.K., DeGeneres faced public scrutiny over allegations of fostering a toxic workplace on her talk show. She apologized in writing to staff but later described the scandal as misogynistic and overly orchestrated. Some former employees criticized her for making light of the situation during her Netflix comedy show in 2024, while others appreciated her attempt to address the controversy.
Future Plans
The couples precise plans for their U.S. stay remain unclear. Whether it will be a brief visit or a more permanent relocation will likely depend on both personal and professional considerations, including de Rossis potential return to acting and the couples desire to reconnect with friends and familiar surroundings.
