Facts about Brian Cole Jr., the suspect in the January 2021 pipe bomb case

After nearly five years, authorities have identified a suspect in the pipe bomb incidents that occurred near the headquarters of both major political parties in Washington, D.C., just before the January 6 Capitol attack. On Thursday, 30-year-old Brian Cole Jr. was arrested and charged in connection with the unexploded devices. He faces accusations of transporting explosives and attempting to cause destruction using explosive materials, according to official court documents.

While some investigative details were shared in court filings, officials have not confirmed Coles motive or whether the bombs, planted on January 5, 2021, were linked to the Capitol riot, when thousands of Trump supporters stormed the building to contest the certification of Joe Bidens election win.

Background and Residence

Cole resides in a single-family home in Woodbridge, Virginia, a suburb about 25 miles southwest of Capitol Hill. He lives there with his mother and other family members. Neighbors expressed surprise at the arrest, describing the area as typically quiet. Cole works in the office of a bail bondsman, a business owned by his father in northern Virginia, though it is unclear if this is his exact workplace.

Cole graduated from Hylton High School in 2013. Public records do not indicate any political party affiliation, and it is unknown whether he currently has legal representation.

Alleged Acquisition of Bomb Materials

According to court documents, Cole purchased items between 2019 and 2020 that matched components used to assemble the pipe bombs placed at the Republican and Democratic National Committee headquarters. Federal prosecutors claim he continued acquiring materials even after the devices were planted on January 5. Items allegedly purchased include galvanized pipes, end caps, battery connectors, kitchen timers, electrical wire, and steel wool from retailers such as Home Depot and Walmart. Other purchases included safety glasses, sandpaper, gloves, and disinfecting wipes in the months leading up to the Capitol events.

Evidence Linking Cole to the Scene

Investigators also used cellphone tower data to place Cole near the locations of the party headquarters. His phone reportedly connected to local towers multiple times between 7:39 p.m. and 8:24 p.m. on January 5. Additionally, license plate reader data showed his 2017 Nissan Sentra in the vicinity shortly before the bombs were observed.

The affidavit stated, For all of the reasons stated above, there is probable cause that, on January 5, 2021, COLE placed pipe bombs outside of the RNC and the DNC.

FBI Search in Suburban Neighborhood

A neighbor described the FBIs early-morning operation outside Coles home, noting agents in tactical gear with automatic rifles and vehicles resembling Humvees. Residents were instructed to exit their homes with hands up. The neighbor recognized Cole but had never interacted with him, describing him as a quiet individual who often walked his Chihuahua and kept to himself.
