The suspect in the Gilgo Beach serial murders, Rex Heuermann, is likely to plead guilty during his court hearing on April 8, 2026. Heuermann, charged with multiple murders spanning from 1993 to 2011, has been linked to the crimes through DNA evidence and digital records, marking a major development in the case.

The individual accused of committing a series of murders that claimed the lives of seven women along Long Island's Gilgo Beach area is anticipated to formally plead guilty, according to multiple sources. The suspect, New York-based architect Rex Heuermann, has consistently asserted his innocence since his apprehension in July 2023.

Scheduled Court Appearance

Heuermann was originally slated to face trial in September 2026. Current reports indicate that he intends to enter a guilty plea during his upcoming court hearing set for April 8, 2026.

Charges Filed

Initially, Heuermann faced three first-degree murder charges for the deaths of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello. In 2024, law enforcement added charges for four additional killings dating back to 1993, involving victims Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Jessica Taylor, Sandra Costilla, and Valerie Mack.

Evidence Linking Heuermann to the Crimes

The victims' remains were found over a period of nearly two decades, with the most recent discovery in 2011. The cases remained unresolved until 2022, when authorities identified a vehicle registered to Heuermann. This vehicle had been highlighted in a witness tip during Amber Costello’s disappearance in 2010. Investigators reportedly have multiple forms of evidence connecting Heuermann to the murders, including:

  • Cell phone records showing communication with several victims.
  • A computer containing a list described as a plan for executing the murders and eliminating evidence.
  • DNA evidence obtained from a discarded pizza crust linking him to the crimes.

In September 2025, a Suffolk County judge ruled that the DNA evidence could be presented at trial after Heuermann’s legal team attempted to exclude it.

Background of the Gilgo Beach Murders

The Gilgo Beach murders, spanning from the early 1990s through 2011, involved the discovery of several bodies along Long Island beaches and nearby locations. Many cases remained unsolved for years until advancements in forensic techniques, including forensic genealogy, allowed authorities to connect the killings to Heuermann. Law enforcement officials have stated that the combination of witness reports, DNA results, and digital records formed the basis for the investigation and charges.

Next Steps in Legal Proceedings

With Heuermann expected to plead guilty, court proceedings will continue on April 8, 2026. This plea is considered a major development in resolving one of Long Island's most notorious unresolved serial murder cases.
