After almost 50 years of service, Barry Mason, a dedicated groundsman at Newbury Racecourse in Berkshire, is ready to enjoy some well-earned rest. Mason has been responsible for maintaining the track for 47 years, earning respect and admiration from colleagues and racing officials alike.
Staff at Newbury gathered on Saturday to honor Masons remarkable career. Shaun Hinds, the racecourses chief executive, expressed the venues deep appreciation for Masons commitment, saying the team is "incredibly grateful" for his decades of hard work.
Reflecting on his retirement, Mason revealed that he has "a few plans" for the future and is excited to finally experience the races from the stands, something he has never done before. "It hasnt really sunk in yet. Ive thoroughly enjoyed my time here, but its a bit emotional to leave," he said. "I just love horse racing. Now I can watch it from the stands, which is something Ive never done."
Over the years, Mason built strong friendships with his colleagues, enjoying a friendly and lively atmosphere. George Hill, racing director and clerk of the course, praised Masons lifelong dedication. "Barry has devoted his entire life to this racecourse since joining in 1978," Hill said. "The work he has done over 47 years, the evolution he has witnessed, and the care he has shown for the track is extraordinary."
"We are very proud of all that he has accomplished, and he will certainly be missed. Fortunately, he lives nearby, so well still see him on race days," Hill added.
