During a youth basketball match in Indiana, a high school referee unexpectedly collapsed and later died, leaving the local sports community in shock.
Jeff Tamarri, known affectionately by children in the Zionsville youth football league as Jeff the Ref, had been a familiar and trusted figure for many young athletes. His longtime friend, Roger Fiesel, recalled that Tamarri had planned to officiate multiple games over the weekend, including eight for the Danville youth basketball league on Saturday and six more at Plainfield on Sunday.
Fiesel expressed the deep sense of loss felt by those who knew Tamarri. It will be hard on Saturday, he said. But I know he would want the kids to keep playing basketball. He was like a brother to me. He will be missed.
