A portion of the M4 heading east has been shut down for an ongoing investigation after a traffic accident occurred in the early hours of Sunday.

According to National Highways, a vehicle left the eastbound carriageway at approximately 02:00 GMT close to Leigh Delamere Services. This incident led to the closure of the motorway stretch between Junction 18 (Bath) and Junction 17 (Chippenham).

Authorities have not provided a specific reopening time, but initial reports indicate the motorway may remain closed through Sunday afternoon. Vehicles previously stuck have now been allowed to move, and a temporary diversion is operational via the A420.

Update on M4 Eastbound Closure: Investigation Underway

The investigation into the traffic accident on the M4 eastbound has led to ongoing disruptions, with no clear timeline for reopening the affected stretch. While vehicles that were previously stuck have now been cleared, the stretch of motorway between Junction 18 (Bath) and Junction 17 (Chippenham) remains closed as authorities continue to probe the incident.

As reported earlier, the accident occurred around 02:00 GMT near Leigh Delamere Services. The vehicle involved left the carriageway, resulting in a significant enough incident to prompt the closure. National Highways has implemented a temporary diversion via the A420, though this may not alleviate congestion in the area, especially given that the closure is expected to persist through the afternoon.

At present, authorities have not given an estimated reopening time, and drivers are advised to follow diversion routes. Updates will follow as the investigation progresses and more information becomes available.
