The Annual Report on Suicide in the Military details that a total of 471 service members died by suicide in 2024. This figure marks a decrease compared with 531 reported deaths in 2023. As a result, the overall suicide rate fell to 23.2 per 100,000 personnel, down from the previous year’s rate of 26.0 per 100,000.

Trends Among Different Military Groups

The analysis indicates that the decline in suicide rates was reflected across the majority of military categories, although some variations were noted:

Active-duty personnel: Recorded fewer suicide deaths compared to the prior year.
Reservists: Also experienced a reduction in suicide incidence.
National Guard members: Contrary to the overall trend, this group saw a slight increase in suicide cases.
