The mother of a Texas A&M University student who died following a college football tailgate says her daughter's phone was deliberately hidden in the woods. Brianna Aguilera, 19, was discovered dead early Saturday morning at the 21 Rio Apartments in Austin, Texas, hours after the Texas A&M vs. University of Texas game.
While Austin police maintain there is no evidence of foul play and that her death is not being treated as a homicide, Aguileras mother, Stephanie Rodriguez, strongly disagrees. Authorities suggested the fall, from 17 floors, was either accidental or a suicide, a conclusion Rodriguez rejects.
Rodriguez told Fox News that her daughters phone was eventually found inside a friends purse that had been thrown into the woods. She expressed concern about unanswered calls to residents of the apartment complex and inconsistencies in the story she received from friends. "This was not accidental. Someone killed my Brie and gave all the group of friends a lot of time to come up with the same story," she wrote on social media.
Rodriguez also noted there had been a conflict between Brianna and another woman prior to the incident. She criticized the investigators for dismissing text messages that might shed light on the situation. Questions arose about why some friends left the scene immediately and why the apartment resident quickly vacated.
The mother highlighted that her daughters phone was set to "Do Not Disturb," violating their usual family rule that she keep her phone on and share her location when going out. Rodriguez suggested the possibility that her daughter was pushed or fell accidentally while intoxicated, then was discarded from the balcony.
In response, Austin Police Department reiterated that there is no evidence of suspicious or criminal activity. They emphasized that every case is taken seriously and that the investigation into Aguileras death remains open. The Travis County Medical Examiners office indicated that autopsy results may take 90 days or longer.
The community continues to mourn Aguileras death while her family seeks answers about the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
