Authorities report that several students required hospitalization after consuming marijuana-infused gummies at a high school in Florida. Emergency responders from Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue arrived at Stranahan High School Wednesday morning when students began experiencing adverse effects from the edibles.
According to Broward County Public Schools, the affected students "showed signs of a negative reaction after consuming gummies" and were transported to a local hospital "as a precaution." While the school district mentioned that five students were hospitalized, the fire department confirmed that four were actually taken to medical facilities.
Details about how the gummies were brought into the school or who provided them remain unclear.
One parent, Tshura Jones, whose 14-year-old daughter was hospitalized, said her child was misled into thinking the gummies were regular candy. She recounted receiving a message from her daughter at 9:21 a.m. asking to come home because she was feeling unwell. The daughter described the gummies as coming in a green bag and tasting like candy. She also witnessed a classmate faint, describing the experience as "out of body."
Jones confirmed that her daughter's toxicology test indicated marijuana consumption. Another parent reported that her child's drug test also came back positive for marijuana.
Student Brandon Jordan described the appearance of the edibles: "They were colorful and looked like ordinary candy, but within ten minutes, some students just passed out. I was shocked."
WSVN reported that the students involved are now facing disciplinary measures. The school district stated that the incident is under investigation, and Stranahan High School will "take appropriate action based on the findings."
One student emphasized the danger of such substances, saying, "Students shouldnt be indulging in this type of activity at school." Another advised peers, "You dont know where it came from. Dont take it!"
