National Guard member fatally shot in Washington DC

President Donald Trump announced that one of the two National Guard members shot in Washington DC on Wednesday has died. Sarah Beckstrom, aged 20, succumbed to her injuries, while the second soldier, 24-year-old Andrew Wolfe, remains in critical condition.

The shooting occurred just after 14:00 EST (19:00 GMT) near Farragut Square in downtown DC. Both victims were shot at close range. Authorities have apprehended a suspect, 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, originally from Afghanistan.

The National Guard troops had been deployed to the capital as part of the administrations effort to address crime in major US cities. President Trump confirmed Beckstroms death during a Thanksgiving call with US service members. He described her as a "highly respected, young, and exceptional individual." Later, he spoke personally with her parents, according to a White House official.

Beckstrom joined the West Virginia Army National Guard on June 26, 2023, serving with the 863rd Military Police Company, 111th Engineer Brigade. She had volunteered for service in Washington over the Thanksgiving holiday, Attorney General Pam Bondi stated. West Virginia Republican Senator Jim Justice expressed his devastation over her death, sending condolences to her family and colleagues.

Both soldiers were patrolling a busy area near 17th and I streets when the attack occurred. Over 2,000 troops have been deployed to Washington since August to support law enforcement in response to what the president called "rampant crime." Beckstrom and Wolfe were part of this deployment.

National Guard members are reservists who can be called up for military service but do not have law enforcement powers. The shootings proximity to the White House allowed police to respond quickly. Law enforcement sources told CBS News that the suspect was shot four times during his apprehension.

Officials reported that Lakanwal arrived in the US from Afghanistan in 2021 under Operation Allies Welcome, a program for Afghan nationals following the US withdrawal. He had previously worked with US forces at Kabul airport during the evacuation of Americans and Afghans. Lakanwal was assigned to Unit 03 of the Kandahar Strike Force, initially under CIA oversight, later with Afghanistan's National Directorate of Security, and specialized in GPS tracking.

US authorities plan to charge him with three counts of assault with intent to kill while armed, plus firearm possession during a violent crime. Bondi announced her office intends to seek the death penalty, labeling him a "dangerous individual who should not have been in the country." Lakanwal applied for asylum in 2024, which was granted earlier this year. Following the incident, US Citizenship and Immigration Services is reviewing all Green Cards issued to nationals from countries deemed of concern, including Afghanistan, Cuba, Haiti, Iran, Somalia, and Venezuela.

Author’s Analysis: Implications of the Washington, D.C. National Guard Shooting

The reported shooting near the White House that killed National Guard Specialist Sarah Beckstrom and critically wounded Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe highlights a stark and sobering reality in the ongoing deployment of military personnel on U.S. streets. Beckstrom’s death, confirmed by President Trump and widely reported by major outlets, occurred during what authorities described as an ambush near Farragut Square, less than two blocks from a major federal landmark. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}

This incident underscores operational risks when troops without law enforcement powers are placed in direct public-facing security roles. National Guard members were deployed as part of a federal mission to support crime control in major cities, yet their involvement in active patrols in a densely populated urban environment contributed to a deadly confrontation. The suspect, a 29‑year‑old Afghan national identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, was apprehended and now faces upgraded federal charges including first‑degree murder. :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}

Beyond the tragic loss of life, this event has had immediate policy ramifications. The administration quickly linked the shooting to broader immigration policy, including a review and temporary pause of asylum decisions and green card reviews for migrants from certain countries. Such measures reflect a shift toward more restrictive immigration enforcement tied directly to national security concerns. :contentReference[oaicite:2]{index=2}

Finally, the continued deployment of over 2,600 National Guard troops in Washington through the end of 2026 — despite legal challenges and local opposition — suggests that this tragic episode will strengthen, rather than diminish, federal commitment to such missions. As the legal case progresses and Wolfe’s condition evolves, this incident will likely remain central to debates about the appropriate use of military forces in domestic contexts. :contentReference[oaicite:3]{index=3}
