Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, a 20-year-old member of the West Virginia National Guard, who was tragically killed in an ambush-style shooting in Washington, D.C., is being honored by former colleagues as vibrant, humorous, and full of life.

"Her coworkers always said she had an amazing sense of humor," said Marcie Vaughan, CEO of Seneca Health Services. "She loved engaging with the community, attending events, and sharing resources that could positively affect people's lives."

Beckstrom was one of two West Virginia National Guard members targeted in the attack. The other victim, Air Force Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe, 24, underwent surgery and remains in critical condition. Authorities believe the suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, acted alone.

Before her deployment, Beckstrom worked as a community engagement specialist at Seneca Health Services, helping individuals at risk of psychiatric hospitalization stay connected to care and maintain stability. Vaughan described her as deeply passionate about serving others.

"Joining the National Guard and working in behavioral health shows true compassion," Vaughan said. "Her willingness to volunteer reflected courage and dedication."

Originally from Summersville, West Virginia, Beckstrom joined the Guard in June 2023. She volunteered for the Washington, D.C., deployment during the Trump administration and was assigned to the 863rd Military Police Company, 111th Engineer Brigade at the time of the attack.

"Her mother was incredibly proud of all she accomplished," Vaughan added. "Sarah was a beautiful, young woman whose life was tragically cut short."

Beckstrom had been on active duty in Washington since August as part of the ongoing White House crime task force. Colleagues are preparing for the emotional impact of her loss.

"Returning to work will be difficult," Vaughan said. "Her mother was present during the incident, and everyone is heartbroken."

She was among roughly 180 National Guard members deployed from West Virginia. Vaughan emphasized the family's need for support and prayers, highlighting Beckstrom's dedication and happiness in serving.

West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey shared his condolences, noting the strong outpouring of support from Beckstrom's unit and family. "All accounts of her in the past few days have been overwhelmingly positive," he said. "She was clearly loved and respected by her peers."
