Efforts to reintroduce beavers into new regions of England have made significant progress as Forestry England moves forward with its plans for Ennerdale. This initiative follows the successful release of beavers at the Lowther Estate near Penrith, Cumbria, in 2020.

Proposal Overview

Forestry England has confirmed that its initial expression of interest for releasing beavers in Ennerdale has received approval. With this step cleared, the project is now eligible for a full application. The current proposal details the introduction of 30 adult beavers, organized likely into 15 pairs. Considering dependent kits within these family groups, the total number of beavers could reach approximately 50 individuals.

Environmental Benefits

Hayley Dauben, the project lead at Forestry England, emphasized the ecological advantages of reintroducing beavers. Beavers are recognized for their role in creating and enhancing habitats that support river ecosystems. Their dam-building activities contribute to the regulation of water flows, support water retention during drought periods, and help maintain water quality.

Dauben noted that these ecological functions are especially important for the Ehen and Calder catchment areas, which have experienced reductions in such natural habitats in recent landscapes.

Beavers were originally native to the British mainland but were hunted to extinction by the 16th century. Current reintroduction projects aim to restore both the species and the ecological benefits they historically provided.

Previous Considerations and Adjustments

Earlier plans to introduce beavers to Ennerdale were temporarily suspended in 2023 due to concerns regarding a proposed metal grill across a river, which could obstruct salmon and trout migration to spawning areas. Following revisions to the proposal, Forestry England expects that the first release of beavers could take place in September 2027.

Results from Lowther Estate

The Lowther Estate has demonstrated early success with the reintroduction program. The first beaver kits were born there in 2024, confirming that the introduced population is reproducing in its new environment.

Protective Measures

Forestry England has implemented strategies to safeguard certain trees considered sensitive or significant. These measures ensure that the benefits provided by beavers do not conflict with local forestry management objectives.

Next Steps and Timeline

The full application is scheduled to be submitted by late 2026. Natural England may require up to four months to review and assess the submission. In preparation, Forestry England is actively consulting with landowners and stakeholders to identify up to 20 potential release sites. These actions represent substantial progress toward reintroducing beavers to Ennerdale and reinstating their ecological role within local river systems.
