President Donald Trump announced on November 27 that Sarah Beckstrom, a National Guard soldier, died following a shooting near the White House. The attack was carried out by an Afghan national, raising questions about immigration vetting and triggering a review of asylum cases.

Beckstrom, 20, succumbed to her injuries, while Andrew Wolfe, 24, remains in critical condition. Both were members of the West Virginia National Guard. Authorities have classified the shooting as a potential act of terrorism and are conducting a thorough investigation.

Sarah Beckstrom of West Virginia, a highly respected and extraordinary young service member, joined the National Guard in June 2023. She excelled in every way and has sadly passed away, Trump said during a Thanksgiving call to service members in Palm Beach, Florida.

The shooting occurred near the Farragut West Metro station around 2:15 p.m. ET on November 26, just blocks from the White House. The suspect, 29-year-old Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal from Washington state, was subdued after being shot by other Guard members.

Profiles of the National Guard Members

Beckstrom, an Army Specialist from Summersville, West Virginia, served in the 863rd Military Police Company, 111th Engineer Brigade. Wolfe, a U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant from Martinsburg, West Virginia, was part of the Force Support Squadron, 167 Airlift Wing. Both had been deployed to Washington, D.C., in August as part of enhanced security measures.

Tributes and Condolences

Leaders and officials expressed sorrow and called for prayers. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi described the loss as devastating and urged justice for Beckstrom. FBI Director Kash Patel highlighted her dedication as a young patriot with her whole life ahead. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth called her an American hero, and U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro noted Beckstroms selfless decision to serve on Thanksgiving.

Beckstroms alma mater, Webster County High School in Upperglade, West Virginia, shared memories of her character, courage, and commitment. Similarly, Wolfes former school, Musselman High, praised his positive impact, leadership, and service to the community.

Investigation and Response

Authorities described the attack as a brazen and targeted ambush. The incident prompted President Trump to deploy 500 additional troops to the capital. The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.

Both victims were performing a high-visibility patrol when the shooting occurred. Beckstrom volunteered for the holiday shift so others could spend Thanksgiving with family, a sacrifice mourned by many officials and community members.

Analysis: National Guard Shooting Near the White House

The tragic death of Sarah Beckstrom underscores the ongoing risks faced by National Guard personnel assigned to high-profile security duties. At just 20 years old, Beckstrom demonstrated exceptional commitment by volunteering for a Thanksgiving shift, a choice that ultimately placed her in harm’s way. The attack, carried out by Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal, has prompted a review of immigration and asylum vetting procedures.

Authorities have classified the shooting as a potential act of terrorism, reflecting the targeted nature of the attack near Farragut West Metro station. While Beckstrom did not survive, her colleague Andrew Wolfe remains in critical condition. Their deployments to Washington, D.C., were part of enhanced security operations, highlighting the ongoing challenges of protecting the capital from unpredictable threats.

The incident has triggered national attention, with federal officials emphasizing both justice and the sacrifices of service members. The deployment of additional troops and the ongoing investigation demonstrate the government’s commitment to immediate security measures while addressing the broader questions raised by the assailant’s background and access to the United States.
