The former partner of National Guardswoman Sarah Beckstrom told CNN on Friday that Beckstrom felt frustrated during her assignment in Washington, D.C., believing her ability to act was severely limited. Beckstrom, 20, and her colleague Andrew Wolfe, 24, were both shot while on patrol on Thanksgiving Eve. Beckstrom later died from her injuries, while Wolfe remains hospitalized in critical condition.
A 29-year-old Afghan immigrant has been arrested and charged in connection with the shootings.
In West Virginia, CNN correspondent Gabe Cohen spoke with Beckstroms former boyfriend, Adam Carr, who described her conflicting feelings about the deployment. Carr said Beckstrom was torn: while she understood the missions purpose, she felt powerless to intervene when confronted with hostile or criminal behavior.
They deputized her, but she wasnt allowed to take action, Carr explained. People would spit at them, curse at them, throw objects, and they couldnt do anything. She wanted to make a difference, but she felt so restricted. She kept asking, Why am I here if I cant do anything? It feels pointless.
President Donald Trump publicly announced Beckstroms death on Thursday, honoring her service and describing her as highly respected and remarkable. He noted she began her service in June 2023 and had shown outstanding dedication in every aspect of her role.
In response to the incident, Trump also stated he would permanently pause immigration from certain countries as part of broader measures to strengthen border security.
