UPPERGLADE, W.Va. On Saturday, November 29, 2025, residents of Webster County High School gathered in the gymnasium to pay tribute to West Virginia Army National Guard Spc. Sarah Beckstrom, a graduate of the school just two years earlier.

Sarah was the kind of student every teacher hoped for, said Principal Gabriel Markle, who had taught Beckstrom. She exuded quiet strength, a bright smile, and an energy that lifted everyone around her.

Beckstrom, 20, lost her life on November 27 in Washington, D.C., during a targeted attack while on duty with the National Guard. Markle noted, Her dedication to serviceboth in school and in the militaryreflected her exceptional character.

Local residents in Webster Springs honored Beckstrom by wearing blue ribbons and describing her as a helpful, peacekeeping presence in their community. She had aspired to become an FBI agent and served in a Military Police company.

Its tragic, but Im proud that Sarah represents not only West Virginia but our county, said Amy Jones, who knew Beckstroms family.

Governor Patrick Morrisey attended the candlelight vigil, pledging that justice would be pursued. Sarah loved her state, loved her country, and wanted to serve, he said. Its difficult not to feel anger at her loss.

The suspected shooter, 29-year-old Afghan refugee Rahmanullah Lakanwal, faces a first-degree murder charge and other charges after targeting two National Guard members, including Beckstrom. The other victim, U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, remains hospitalized in critical condition; he is also from West Virginia.

Members of the Webster County High School Junior ROTC presented the colors during the vigil. Community members held three separate vigils following Beckstroms passing.

Senator Robbie Morris, R-Randolph, commented, The loss of Sarah Beckstrom in such a tragic way has left everyone who knew her in deep grief. The vigils have been filled with tears and broken hearts. My thoughts remain with her family, friends, and fellow Guardsmen.

The crowd prayed and sang Amazing Grace, lit candles, and displayed blue ribbons and wreaths throughout the town. Junior ROTC member Liam Versmessen, 17, reflected, It felt like a fitting tribute, showing the strength of West Virginians coming together.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been made public. Governor Morrisey noted that Beckstrom and Wolfe were friends and were patrolling near a Metro station close to the White House when the shooting occurred.

Beckstrom had been part of the National Guard deployment to Washington, D.C., originally initiated by the Trump administration in August for Operation D.C. Safe and Beautiful. Approximately 150 West Virginia Guard members remain stationed in D.C. on a voluntary basis since mid-November.

Following the attack, President Donald Trump announced plans to permanently pause migration from all Third World Countries, without specifying which nations would be affected.
