The operation to locate an 18-year-old student who disappeared in Romanias Bucegi Mountains has been halted once more due to dangerous weather conditions. George Smyth, a University of Bristol student from Shropshire, has been missing since November 23, authorities confirmed.
He was reportedly hiking in the area when he vanished. During Thursday's search, rescuers did not find any personal belongings or signs that might indicate where he could have taken refuge, according to Braov mountain rescue service.
The service noted that avalanche risk in the region is at level 4, making any search efforts highly dangerous for the rescuers. Despite this, officials assured the public that the search is ongoing and will resume as soon as conditions improve. Director Sebastian Marinescu emphasized that the team is fully prepared to restart operations at the earliest opportunity.
Earlier reports indicate that Smyth left Poiana Braov on the morning of November 23 and reached the Tiganesti area, where he called for help through an emergency line. Seventeen rescuers attempted to continue the search in Tiganesti Valley on Thursday morning, but the operation was suspended again by evening.
Rescuers from Braov, Rnov, Predeal, and Victoria have combed all accessible areas, but weather remains extremely challenging, with snow depths exceeding two meters in several parts of the valley. Marinescu explained that digging or navigating exposed sections under these conditions would be too risky.
He reassured that the search has not been abandoned, stating that Salvamont Braov never gives up on any missing person, regardless of nationality or circumstances. If Smyths phone or any definitive evidence is found, rescuers are ready to act immediately and move to the exact location.
Currently, clearing the deep snow in Tiganesti Valley is impossible. The team remains in regular contact with Smyths family, keeping them informed about ongoing efforts.
Newport Salop RUFC described Smyth as "a much-loved member" of the club and expressed deep concern over his disappearance while hiking in the Bucegi Mountains.
