Second stabbing attack on North Carolina commuter train injures man

CHARLOTTE, N.C. Authorities in North Carolina have arrested a 33-year-old man accused of severely wounding another passenger in a stabbing incident aboard a Charlotte commuter train, marking the second such attack in the city this year. The earlier attack involved a Ukrainian refugee who was fatally stabbed in an unrelated incident.

Oscar Solarzano, 33, faces charges including attempted first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police. The assault occurred Friday afternoon, and Solarzano reportedly used a large knife during the attack. The victim was hospitalized in critical but stable condition.

Solarzano is being held without bond. Court records indicate he is in the U.S. illegally and has a prior deportation history. He is scheduled for a hearing Monday in Mecklenburg County District Court. Reports also state that Solarzano appeared intoxicated and provoked the victim into a confrontation.

This incident follows the death of 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska, a Ukrainian woman, who was killed in a seemingly random knife attack on a Charlotte train less than four months ago. Zarutska had recently arrived in the U.S. after living in a bomb shelter in Ukraine. Decarlos Brown Jr. has been charged with her murder in state court and also faces federal charges for causing death on a mass transportation system.

The recent stabbing has drawn public attention, including comments from former President Donald Trump, who highlighted the attack on social media.
