White Oak ISD has removed seven books from its school library after challenges by parents and staff. The titles are now only available in the public library section, allowing community access while restricting student borrowing during school hours.

Since the start of the year, White Oak Independent School District (ISD) has removed seven books from its school library in response to challenges submitted by both parents and faculty members. While these titles are no longer available for in-school borrowing, they remain accessible to the public as part of the dual-function library serving both the school and the wider community.

Library Reclassification and Access

The removed books have been reclassified into the public library section. As a result, students cannot check them out during school hours. Access is still possible outside of school hours, provided the student possesses a valid library card and parental approval for borrowing. This arrangement allows the district to address concerns raised by families and faculty while ensuring continued community access to the materials.

Committee Review and Voting Outcomes

All decisions regarding the removal of the books were made by the White Oak ISD Library Materials Challenge Committee. The committee held three official meetings, including one on March 16, to review and vote on the challenged materials. In each session, the committee voted 4-1 in favor of removing the books from the school library collection.

Subjects Covered in the Removed Books

The challenged books contained content on various topics that led to their removal from the school library. Among these subjects were:

Sexual content
LGBTQ themes
Mental health issues
Other topics considered inappropriate or unsuitable for students by parents and faculty

The district has clarified that while these books are no longer accessible for in-school use, the reclassification ensures they remain available in the public library section, maintaining broader access for community members.

The book removal process at White Oak ISD has received attention from local media, highlighting the district's efforts to balance community concerns with access to educational materials.
