Son of Georgia Woman Who Gave Birth While Brain Dead Is Still Hospitalized and 'Underdeveloped,' Won't be Coming Home Soon

The infant of a Georgia mother who was declared brain dead while pregnant continues to face serious health challenges, her family reports.

Adriana Smith, a registered nurse from Atlanta, was pronounced brain dead in February following multiple blood clots in her brain. At the time, she was approximately eight weeks pregnant. Due to Georgias strict abortion restrictions after six weeks of gestation, she was kept on life support to allow her pregnancy to continue.

Smith delivered her son, Chance, via emergency Cesarean section on June 13. The newborn weighed about 1 pound 13 ounces and was immediately admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
