Southwestern University's Interim Leader to be State Regents' Vice Chancellor

The Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education have confirmed that Joel Kendall, currently serving as Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs, will take on the role of interim president at Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU). Kendall, who has previously held an executive role at SWOSU, is scheduled to begin his temporary leadership on January 12, 2026, according to the Regional University System of Oklahoma. The announcement was made on Monday, December 22.

University Overview

  • Main Campus: Weatherford, Oklahoma
  • Branch Campuses: Sayre and Yukon
  • Year Founded: 1901
  • Student Population: Approximately 5,200

This appointment follows the resignation of Diana Lovell, who stepped down from her position as president effective at the end of December. The university is actively searching for a permanent successor while Kendall assumes responsibility for managing SWOSU's academic programs and administrative functions during the interim period.

Professional Insight

Higher education analyst Dr. Melissa Hart emphasized the significance of appointing a leader familiar with both the university and the broader state education system. She stated that Kendalls prior experience at SWOSU, combined with his current role in the state higher education administration, will provide continuity and stability throughout the transitional phase.

Next Steps for the University

Southwestern's Board of Regents will continue a nationwide search for a permanent president. During this time, Kendall will oversee university operations, ensuring that academic and administrative affairs proceed without disruption.
