The Austin Police Department has officially determined the cause of death for Brianna Marie Aguilera, a 19-year-old Texas A&M student who was found deceased on the morning of Saturday, November 29, outside a high-rise apartment in Austin, Texas.
During a press briefing on Thursday, December 4, authorities confirmed that Aguilera died by suicide. Sgt. Nathan Sexton stated, All the evidence collected points to suicide.
The investigation involved multiple interviews with witnesses and a thorough review of evidence. Detectives discovered a deleted digital note on Aguilera's phone, dated November 25, which appeared to be addressed to people close to her.
Detective Robert Marshall, the lead homicide investigator, explained, After examining witness accounts, video footage, and digital evidence, there is no indication of criminal involvement. Unfortunately, Brianna had previously expressed suicidal thoughts to friends in October, which continued until the evening of her death.
Aguilera was found outside the 21 Rio apartment complex shortly after a football rivalry game between Texas A&M and the University of Texas concluded. Police Chief Lisa Davis noted the departments rare public statement on the matter was due to misinformation circulating, which had affected others involved.
Aguileras mother, Stephanie Rodriguez, had initially questioned the suggestion of suicide, expressing disbelief to media outlets and speculating about other causes. Police confirmed there was no evidence supporting those alternative theories.
Video surveillance revealed a gathering on the 17th floor of the apartment earlier in the evening, but most attendees had left, leaving Aguilera with three other individuals. Aguilera was reportedly on a phone call with her boyfriend two minutes before falling from the balcony, a detail corroborated by call logs.
Earlier in the day, Aguilera attended a tailgate party at the Austin Rugby Club, where she reportedly lost her phone and became intoxicated to the point of being asked to leave, according to police statements.
In response to her death, Aguileras family established a GoFundMe page, which has raised nearly $40,000. Mental health support is available 24/7 through the 988 Lifeline for those in need.
