A man shared on Reddit that his Thanksgiving gathering collapsed into chaos after his 8-year-old nephew repeatedly assaulted him. According to his account, the child has a long pattern of violent behavior toward relatives, teachers, and even police officers. The man said the boy had previously threatened family members with a knife, struck his grandmother so severely she was hospitalized, and regularly threw objects at her.
Trouble began early in the holiday visit. The boy was reportedly jumping on furniture, shouting, and hitting his uncle in the head despite several warnings. The man said his repeated requests for the child to stop and respect the rules of the house were ignored, and his sister did nothing to intervene.
As the day went on, the child allegedly targeted other family members as well, including an incident where he struck the mans brother, causing him to spill his drink on the carpet. Throughout the meal, the boy continued to hit his uncle for more than three hours. The man, his wife, and his parents all tried to de-escalate the behavior, but nothing helped.
The uncle eventually warned the boy that if he kept acting violently, he would not be allowed back and would not receive Christmas gifts. The child continued the behavior even when ignored, repeatedly hitting his uncle while he was eating.
When the man attempted to carry the boy over to his mother to prevent further escalation, the child laughed and head-butted him in the face. The mans sister then misinterpreted the situation, thinking her brother was choking her son, and began yelling at him. After putting the child down, the boy allegedly punched him again, leading the man to restrain him briefly. When he loosened his grip, the child struck him once more.
The man said his nephew continued shouting obscenities and threatening him as his sister finally stepped in. She left the gathering with her son, leaving the rest of the family shaken. The uncle described being left with a bruised face, a damaged nose, and a severe headache.
He added that his mother blamed him for escalating the situation, while he argued that years of ignoring the childs actions had enabled the violence. He wrote that he was devastated, having spent significant money, time off work, and months of planning to make Thanksgiving special.
One brother stayed afterward to support him, saying he felt terrible knowing how much effort had gone into the event. The man said this was the third time his nephew had attacked him at a family gathering and had to be restrained.
He and his wife ultimately agreed they could no longer attend family events where the boy was present, fearing he would eventually cause serious harm. Other siblings also said they would avoid gatherings with the child, especially one brother who did not want his daughter exposed to further violence.
Although heartbroken, the man said he felt he had no other option. He emphasized his love for his mother and sister and his sadness at the growing rift in the family but refused to continue tolerating violent behavior without consequences.
Responding to commenters, he said he had hoped the child was improving after counseling sessions and had wanted Thanksgiving to go smoothly. Now, he admitted he was unsure what the future would hold, saying he still couldnt believe the situation had unfolded the way it did.
