Thanksgiving Holiday Travel Problems Continue After Several Snowstorms

A rare combination of winter weather struck at the worst possible moment, dumping 8.4 inches of snow in a single day at O'Hare International Airport, one of the busiest travel hubs in the United States, just as millions were returning from Thanksgiving holiday trips. The National Weather Service confirmed that this snowfall set a new single-day November record at OHare, surpassing the previous 8-inch record set in 1951.
Travelers found themselves stranded as hundreds of flights were canceled amid the heavy snowfall. Don Herrian, a 76-year-old retiree from Ardmore, Oklahoma, described the scene: his first flight was delayed by three hours, and his connecting flight to Oklahoma City was already two hours behind schedule. I just hope I get home tonight, he said.
Roads leading to the airport remained congested Sunday despite snow clearance, and inside terminals, passengers crowded gate areas, restaurants, and bars to pass the time. Some took to the floors, using phones, knitting, or snacking. According to FlightAware, about 300 flights were canceled and 1,600 delayed by early evening.
De-icing operations extended across multiple airports, including Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and MinneapolisSaint Paul International Airport. Regions near Lake Michigan saw snowfall totals exceeding 12 inches, prompting many churches in western Michigan to stream services online rather than hold in-person gatherings. In Wisconsin, utility crews worked to restore electricity to thousands, with We Energies reporting over 6,000 outages, mostly in Milwaukee and South Milwaukee.
In Iowa, Des Moines Airport reopened after a Delta Connection flight slid off an icy runway, though no injuries occurred. Gusty winds continued to blow snow back onto roads, prolonging hazardous driving conditions. Fort Dodge, Iowa, recorded over 16 inches of snow. Meteorologist Andrew Orrison noted that while the Great Lakes regions snow was easing, a new storm system was forecasted for the mid-Atlantic and Northeast, potentially dropping up to a foot of snow by Tuesday.
Travelers at OHare, like 25-year-old Will Barney from Charlotte, North Carolina, faced multiple delays and crowded terminals. He described navigating the airport amid the holiday and winter chaos, noting the compounding challenges of Thanksgiving travel and heavy snowfall.
