Temporary traffic signals have been set up at a busy junction after multiple collisions occurred near ongoing roadworks. These works are part of the Sizewell C project, which involves constructing a roundabout at Friday Street and linking it to a new bypass serving Farnham and Stratford St Andrew.
Local authorities and Suffolk Police have expressed concerns over what they describe as "confusing" traffic lights at the site. Police confirmed that three separate accidents are currently under investigation.
Sizewell C, responsible for the roadworks while building a nearby nuclear power station, announced that three-way traffic lights will operate from the evening rush hour until 06:00 GMT the following morning to enhance safety. The work on the A12 junction with the A1094 at Friday Street began over the summer and is scheduled to continue until spring.
Traffic barriers are being replaced with cones, and road sign placements are being reassessed to improve visibility for drivers. A spokesperson for Sizewell C said, "We are coordinating closely with Suffolk County Council and the police to address concerns about traffic management on Friday Street. Safety remains our highest priority. We will monitor the area daily and adjust traffic arrangements to protect both motorists and our team."
Councillor Julia Ewart highlighted the dangers at the junction after recent accidents. She advised drivers to avoid the area and reported the situation to the Health and Safety Executive, describing it as a "treacherous site." She added, "The right-of-way has changed, and it has become difficult for drivers to understand the flow. The numerous lights make it hard to see at night, and accidents continue to happen."
The stretch of the A12 sees more than 15,000 vehicles daily, connecting Farnham and Stratford St Andrew to the A1094 for Aldeburgh. Suffolk County Council and Suffolk Police stated they are working closely with Sizewell C and will continue reviewing traffic management measures. The roadworks are expected to remain until spring.
Analysis: Traffic Safety Concerns at Friday Street Junction
The ongoing roadworks at the A12 junction with the A1094 at Friday Street, part of the Sizewell C nuclear power station project, have raised significant safety concerns. Multiple accidents in the area have prompted local authorities to take immediate action. Temporary traffic lights have been installed at the site, but police and local officials have expressed doubts over their effectiveness, describing the signals as "confusing." Three separate accidents are under investigation, highlighting the urgency of addressing the issue.
Local authorities, including Suffolk County Council and Suffolk Police, are working alongside Sizewell C to improve traffic management. Despite efforts to enhance safety with three-way traffic lights during peak hours and the reassessment of road signs and barriers, there is still confusion among drivers. The situation is exacerbated by poor visibility at night, making it even more challenging for motorists to navigate the area safely.
As roadworks continue until spring, the junction's high traffic volume, with over 15,000 vehicles passing through daily, makes it crucial to resolve these issues swiftly. Councillor Julia Ewart has raised concerns with the Health and Safety Executive, referring to the site as "treacherous" and urging drivers to avoid the area. It is clear that while efforts are being made, further adjustments and careful monitoring will be necessary to ensure the safety of both motorists and roadwork crews.
