On Thanksgiving, while many Americans celebrated with family, one West Virginia family faced tragedy following an ambush-style attack in Washington, DC. US Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, died in the incident, and her fellow National Guard member, US Air Force Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe, 24, remains in critical condition after surgery.
President Donald Trump expressed condolences during a call to service members, saying, Shes just passed away. Shes no longer with us. Shes looking down at us right now.
Wolfes father, Jason Wolfe, shared with CNN: Please keep my son in your prayers. Hes a great person and a fighter. Both Beckstrom and Wolfe were part of the National Guard contingent sent to the nations capital in August as part of a federal law enforcement surge.
About the National Guard Members
- Sarah Beckstrom: A 20-year-old from Summersville, West Virginia, Beckstrom volunteered to work in DC over Thanksgiving so others could be home with family. She joined the West Virginia Army National Guard on June 26, 2023, assigned to the 863rd Military Police Company, 111th Engineer Brigade. Webster County High School remembered her as someone of strength and character, and she had aspired to eventually join the FBI.
- Andrew Wolfe: A 24-year-old from Martinsburg, West Virginia, Wolfe has served in the National Guard since February 5, 2019, and is part of the Force Support Squadron, 167th Airlift Wing. Friends and neighbors describe him as kind, generous, and hardworking.
Beckstroms father, Gary Beckstrom, was by her side on Thanksgiving. Her former boyfriend, Adam Carr, remembered her as loving and devoted, noting her dedication to small acts of care like preparing lunch and waiting at the door with a hug.
A vigil for the two soldiers was held in Webster Springs, West Virginia, where community members remembered Beckstroms kindness and compassion. In Washington, DC, local and federal authorities honored Beckstrom with a dignified transfer procession.
Neighbors of Wolfe in Martinsburg expressed shock at the news. Michael Langone, living next door to Wolfe, described him as a helpful and friendly neighbor, while others emphasized his dedication to his duties and the close-knit community he belongs to.
Author's Commentary: Honoring Service Amid Tragedy
The attack in Washington, DC over Thanksgiving underscores the risks faced by National Guard members even in times typically reserved for family and reflection. Sarah Beckstrom’s death at just 20 years old is a stark reminder of the personal sacrifices made by young service members volunteering far from home. Her dedication to duty, including choosing to serve while others celebrated, highlights her commitment to the country and community.
Andrew Wolfe remains in critical condition, and the outpouring of support from his family and neighbors demonstrates the tight-knit bonds within both military and civilian communities. Statements from President Trump and family members emphasize the human cost behind headlines and statistics, giving a face to the courage and vulnerability inherent in military service.
The response from local communities in West Virginia, including vigils and remembrances, reflects the broader social impact of such incidents. Beckstrom and Wolfe’s service, their personal qualities, and the support from those around them provide context for understanding the gravity of the event beyond the immediate tragedy.
As investigations and medical updates continue, it is important to recognize both the heroism and the profound personal losses experienced by families, communities, and the nation. The story of Beckstrom and Wolfe is a reminder of the ongoing responsibilities and sacrifices borne by National Guard members in maintaining public safety.
