On Wednesday, two members of the National Guard were shot in Washington DC, resulting in the death of one soldier. Here is the information reported so far:
At approximately 2:15 PM on Wednesday, a man allegedly carried out an attack described as ambush-style by Jeanine Pirro, the US Attorney for the District of Columbia. The incident occurred two blocks northwest of the White House, targeting two West Virginia National Guard members.
The victims were identified as Sarah Beckstrom, 20, and Andrew Wolfe, 24, both recently sworn-in guards. Sarah Beckstrom passed away on Thursday evening, as confirmed by former President Donald Trump and the Governor of West Virginia. Her father had earlier stated that she suffered a mortal wound.
The suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, was shot at the scene by a third National Guard member and is currently hospitalized. Authorities report that his injuries are not life-threatening. Lakanwal faces charges of assault with intent to kill while armed and possession of a firearm during a violent crime. These charges could escalate to first-degree murder if the other National Guard member succumbs to injuries.
Motives behind the attack are still unclear. Pirro stated, its too soon to say, while Jeffery Carroll, executive assistant to the DC Police Chief, mentioned that investigators have no information on a motive. According to Carroll, the suspect came around the corner and immediately opened fire on the troops. Lakanwal reportedly drove across the United States from his home in Bellingham, Washington, where he lives with his wife and five children, allegedly to carry out the attack.
Lakanwal had previously worked with the CIA in Afghanistan and arrived in the US in 2021 under a resettlement program for Afghans who assisted US operations. CIA Director John Ratcliffe confirmed that Lakanwal had been a member of a partner force in Kandahar. He was granted asylum in the US in late April under the Trump administration, despite concerns from officials about vetting processes. A government file reviewed by Reuters indicated that he was vetted by the US because of his work with US government partners during the war in Afghanistan.
In response to the shooting, the Trump administration ordered an additional 500 National Guard members to Washington and announced a series of immigration-related reviews.
