CIA Director John Ratcliffe confirmed that Lakanwal had been a member of a partner force in Kandahar. He was granted asylum in the US in late April under the Trump administration, despite concerns from officials about vetting processes. A government file reviewed by Reuters indicated that he was vetted by the US because of his work with US government partners during the war in Afghanistan.

In response to the shooting, the Trump administration ordered an additional 500 National Guard members to Washington and announced a series of immigration-related reviews.
