A woman who allegedly attacked a tourist in the bathroom of a Macy's department store in New York City had been discharged from a psychiatric facility just hours before the assault. Authorities reported that the suspect, identified as 39-year-old Jane Aherne, had recently been treated for mental health issues at a local hospital.
The incident occurred on December 5th, when Aherne, still recovering from her psychiatric treatment, attacked a 56-year-old tourist. Police said Aherne used a knife to stab the victim multiple times in a restroom on the lower level of Macy's flagship store on Herald Square.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, providing immediate medical care to the victim, who was later transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities noted that the tourist was fortunate to avoid more severe harm.
Following the stabbing, Aherne was arrested at the scene without resistance. Investigators discovered that she had only been released from the psychiatric hospital earlier in the day and had been staying in a nearby shelter. According to law enforcement, Aherne had a history of mental health issues and had previously been hospitalized for similar concerns.
The motive behind the attack is unclear at this time, but investigators are examining whether Aherne's mental state played a significant role in the incident. Aherne is facing charges of attempted murder and assault. Her next court appearance is scheduled for December 17th, where more details may be revealed.
