Over 55 million Americans warned of snow and ice from Kentucky to Maine

A winter storm swept across the Midwest and Southern United States on Monday, delivering the regions first substantial snowfall and icy conditions of the season. The system is projected to spread ice through Appalachia and heavy snow to the Northeast on Tuesday.

Kansas City experienced 3 to 5 inches of snow, while St. Louis and Indianapolis each recorded 2 to 4 inches. Louisville received approximately 3 inches. Icy roads in Oklahoma and Arkansas created hazardous travel, with similar conditions anticipated Tuesday as the storm advances toward Boone, North Carolina, and Roanoke, Virginia.

Along the East Coast, temperatures are expected to stay above freezing, though a brief early morning mix of snow and sleet around Washington, D.C., could disrupt travel. Inland areas may see 2 to 4 inches of snow Tuesday across parts of Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and western New York. Northern Pennsylvania and central New York could experience 4 to 6 inches, prompting active winter weather advisories.

From northeastern Pennsylvania to central Maine, a winter storm warning predicts snow totals exceeding six inches, with some locations possibly receiving 9 to 12 inches. Snow is expected to diminish overnight, with dry conditions by sunrise.

Later this week, a separate system moving south from Canada will bring sub-zero temperatures to much of North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and eastern Nebraska, affecting cities like Minneapolis, Omaha, and Bismarck. In the Northeast, New York City is forecasted to face its coldest weather of the season on Friday, with morning lows near 20F and afternoon highs remaining around the freezing mark.
