A temporary library has been launched in Bridgwater while urgent repairs take place at the original site. The main Bridgwater Library has been closed since 22 October after Somerset Council allocated 1.5 million to repair its leaking roof.

To ensure residents still have access to library services, the council has set up a pop-up facility at Bridgwater House. Councillor Federica Smith-Roberts, the lead member for communities, housing, and culture, expressed the council's satisfaction at being able to maintain this essential community resource.

The original library, a historic listed building near Blake Gardens, is expected to reopen in early January. Councillor Smith-Roberts emphasized the councils commitment to reopening the building as quickly as possible.

First opened in 1906, the library was forced to close after interior ceiling damage occurred due to the roof leak. The temporary library on Northgate provides book borrowing and returns, public computer access, and will host community events.

Describing libraries as "more than just books," Councillor Smith-Roberts highlighted their role in offering services and connecting people. She added, "Our main focus is, of course, to get the library building up and running as soon as we possibly can."
