Four hikers were stranded on Golden Ears mountain in western Canada after a sudden storm delayed rescue efforts for four days. Severe weather and avalanche risks made air and ground rescue attempts impossible. They were rescued after a break in the weather, in good condition but exhausted.
Four hikers were stranded on a mountain in western Canada for several days after an unexpected storm made rescue operations impossible. The incident took place in January, prompting authorities to issue renewed safety warnings for those navigating alpine terrains.
Storm Hits Golden Ears Summit
On Saturday, January 10, four men from Coquitlam, British Columbia, successfully reached the summit of Golden Ears, a mountain known for its two peaks that rise to a height of 5,630 feet. However, according to Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue and the Vancouver Sun, the weather rapidly deteriorated during their descent. A storm quickly moved in, causing whiteout conditions and significantly reducing visibility. With the weather worsening, the hikers made their way to an emergency shelter located on Panorama Ridge, relying on prior preparation for safety.
Emergency Shelter and SOS Signal
After reaching the shelter, the hikers stayed there for three nights. Inside the shelter, they sent out an SOS signal to inform authorities of their predicament. Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue launched a response the same evening. Despite the swift reaction, rescue operations were immediately hindered. Severe weather prevented helicopters from landing safely, and the risk of avalanches made ground access dangerous for the rescue teams.
Rescue Attempts Blocked by Harsh Weather
On Sunday morning, a helicopter was able to get within about 1,000 feet of the shelter, but it could not safely land. A similar attempt on Monday also failed due to continued poor weather conditions. By Monday evening, it was reported that the hikers had run out of food and other vital supplies. According to Brent Boulet, president of Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue, the depletion of supplies made the rescue even more urgent.
Rescue Completed After Weather Clears
On Tuesday afternoon, January 13, a break in the weather allowed helicopters to safely land near the emergency shelter. Rescue teams were then able to extract the hikers, ending their four-day ordeal on the mountain. Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue reported that the hikers were fatigued and hungry but in good physical condition. They were then flown to a nearby airport where they were reunited with their families.
Safety Advice from Rescue Officials
Following the successful rescue, search and rescue officials issued a series of safety recommendations for those planning to travel in mountainous regions. Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue emphasized the importance of being prepared for sudden weather changes, carrying overnight supplies, and checking avalanche conditions before heading into alpine areas.
- Monitor weather forecasts before and during hikes
- Carry equipment necessary for overnight survival
- Check avalanche conditions in advance
- Ensure proper training and knowledge for navigating avalanche-prone terrain
Brent Boulet also highlighted that winter ascents in the Golden Ears alpine region require more advanced mountaineering skills rather than just basic hiking abilities.
