Exactly one year has passed since severe floodwaters swept through towns and communities, causing extensive destruction. Waterfront Park experienced heavy flooding, which led to the cancellation of the annual Thunder Over Louisville event. In Frankfort, both local churches and distilleries temporarily shut their doors, while Utica, Indiana, officially documented the flood’s effects in its local records. The Bardstown river was filled with debris, including broken wood and shattered remnants, reflecting the scale of the damage caused by the disaster.

Impact on Colesburg

Colesburg, a small town in Hardin County known for its two churches along I-65 and the L&N railway, continues to recover from the flood that occurred on April 6 of last year. Floodwaters infiltrated homes, submerging structures and reaching the chest level of some residents. Mobile homes along Lower Colesburg Road were particularly affected, with waters rising to extreme levels. In one area, the river reached 52 feet, which was 17 feet above the standard flood stage. Personal property and historic sites were heavily damaged, leaving residents with extensive reconstruction needs.

One resident, Devie Willet, had her home entirely renovated after severe water damage. Her son, Isaiah Willet, documented the devastation through video footage showing the first floor fully submerged. Restoration work has progressed, leaving most spaces functional, though some rooms still await completion.

In response to the disaster, Devie Willet initiated a project called Colesburg RISE, aiming to rebuild homes while strengthening community ties. Her vision focused on restoring the town's infrastructure and creating a resilient social network. Residents contributed to cleanup and reconstruction, removing debris and repairing damaged properties. Darryl Flowers and other volunteers assisted in clearing rubble and coordinating recovery efforts, emphasizing both structural rebuilding and community cohesion.
