March 6, 1908, marks the only recorded Atlantic hurricane in March, striking the Caribbean unexpectedly. The storm reached Category 2, affecting islands like Saint Kitts and Nevis, causing severe damage and flooding, and remains a unique event in meteorological history.

This Date Marks the Sole March Hurricane in History

March is generally outside the Atlantic hurricane season, yet historical records document a rare storm that affected the Caribbean in early March. On March 6, 1908, a tropical storm originated approximately 500 miles northeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico. This remains the only verified occurrence of a tropical storm or hurricane in the Atlantic during March.

Formation and Initial Development

The 1908 storm emerged long before satellite technology existed. At that time, knowledge of Atlantic tropical cyclones relied mainly on ship observations and reports from affected coastal areas. Historical accounts indicate that the tropical storm strengthened and achieved hurricane status later the same day it formed.

Trajectory and Strength

After its formation, the hurricane moved south-southwest. It intensified to a Category 2 hurricane as it passed over the northern Leeward Islands, notably affecting Saint Kitts and Nevis. The storm brought severe conditions to the northeastern Caribbean, catching residents off guard since it occurred outside the recognized hurricane season.

Effects on Caribbean Islands

Residents and observers documented the hurricane's impact in detail. Reports from St. Croix noted that the storm produced unusually strong weather, comparable to regular hurricane season activity. Specific effects on islands included:

  • Saint Eustatius: A sailboat broke free from its anchor and was later found abandoned off the southeast coast of Puerto Rico, missing its mast and sails nearly two weeks after the storm.
  • Saint Barthlemy: Buildings sustained structural damage, including a local church.
  • Saint Martin/Sint Maarten: Temporary tents for local farmers were destroyed, and the cotton crop suffered considerable losses.
  • Saint Kitts: Heavy rainfall, up to eight inches, caused localized flooding and property damage.

Historical Importance

This 1908 hurricane is unparalleled in meteorological records. It is the only documented tropical storm or hurricane in the Atlantic Basin during March. Its atypical timing and intensity make it a significant event in Caribbean weather history.

Expert Observations

Meteorologists note that extreme and rare weather events like this March hurricane are valuable for both scientific study and historical research. The storm provides insight into early 20th-century tropical cyclone activity and contributes to understanding seasonal anomalies in the Atlantic.
