Forecasters issue amber rain alert warning of floods

Weather experts have cautioned that severe rainfall could lead to flooding in several areas after an amber alert was issued. The warning follows a period of extreme weather that has already caused widespread disruption.

Earlier, strong winds swept across parts of north-west Scotland, prompting amber wind warnings. In South Lanarkshire, the M74 motorway was temporarily closed between junctions 12 and 13 near Abington after powerful gusts overturned multiple heavy goods vehicles.

The seasons second named storm also disrupted rail services, with fallen trees and damaged overhead power lines affecting journeys. Power outages were reported at more than 1,000 homes as conditions worsened.

Wind speeds peaked dramatically during the storm, reaching up to 76mph on South Uist in the Western Isles. Comparable gusts were also experienced in parts of Lanarkshire and Dumfries and Galloway.

With further heavy rain forecast, authorities warned that diversion routes, including the Rest and Be Thankful, may be required, and motorists are advised to remain alert as conditions continue to evolve.
