Residents in the Northeast are enjoying a brief pause in winter weather before a new storm brings snow and ice later this week. Travel conditions are improving temporarily, but forecasters warn that snowfall and icy roads are expected to return soon, affecting much of the region.

Short break in weather before more snow and ice hits the Northeast

Residents throughout the Northeastern United States are currently experiencing a short period of improved travel conditions as many prepare for holiday travel. This brief break in winter weather is expected to be temporary, with a new system bringing snow and ice arriving shortly after.

The FOX Forecast Center reports that most of the region will see a pause in storm activity before snow returns late on Christmas night and continues into Saturday. Although the exact track of the approaching storm remains uncertain, meteorologists indicate that the general timing and anticipated impacts are becoming more defined.

Timing and Expected Effects

  • Rain, snow, and ice are predicted to move into the region starting Friday.
  • Wintry conditions may persist into Saturday afternoon.
  • Due to the storm systems rapid movement, many areas are likely to dry out by Saturday afternoon.

The forecast anticipates that a large portion of the Northeast will see total snowfall between 3 and 5 inches. Certain locations may experience higher totals depending on the amount of cold air remaining in place as the storm progresses.

Regions Likely to See Snow Accumulation

  • Catskills and Poconos
  • Tri-state region
  • Central New Jersey extending through New York City
  • Southern Connecticut

In some isolated areas, snowfall could reach 5 to 8 inches, depending on the storms track and temperature variations. Final totals will be determined by these factors.

Ice Threats and Travel Risks

A strong high-pressure system over Quebec is expected to elevate the potential for ice accumulation, particularly in central Pennsylvania. Ice deposits of 0.10 to 0.25 inches are possible, with some areas potentially exceeding a quarter inch. This may result in scattered power outages and hazardous road conditions from Friday afternoon into early Saturday. The greatest risk of icing is anticipated from State College, Pennsylvania, to Frederick, Maryland.

Forecasters warn that Winter Weather Advisories or Winter Storm Warnings are likely to be issued as the storm approaches.

Future Weather Monitoring

Meteorologists are also tracking another fast-moving storm system expected to affect the Northeast toward the end of the weekend and into the beginning of the New Years Eve week. This system is projected to bring a combination of rain and snow. Continuous updates and detailed forecasts will be provided throughout the holiday period to keep residents informed and prepared.
