Rescue teams are actively searching for a 76-year-old British man who went overboard from the TUI Marella Explorer 2 cruise ship near Tenerife, Spain. The incident occurred on Thursday, November 27, and the passenger has not been seen since.

Local news sources, including El Dia and Voz Populi, as well as the UK publication Metro, report that the circumstances surrounding the fall remain unclear. The man went overboard approximately 16 nautical miles from Punta de Teno.

Spanish authorities began searching for the passenger immediately on Thursday and continued operations into Friday. A Spanish coastguard spokesperson confirmed to Metro that the search was relaunched at first light on Friday morning, emphasizing that the man is 76 years old and efforts to locate him are ongoing.

In a statement, the TUI Group expressed sorrow over the incident, stating that the guest was seen entering the water while the ship was en route to La Gomera. The company assured that its care team is providing support to the family and is coordinating closely with local authorities to assist in any way possible.

Following the event, the captain of the 800-foot-long vessel, traveling from Madeira to the Canary Islands, initiated the "man overboard" protocol. Actions included reviewing onboard cameras, conducting circular search patterns, and deploying marker rafts. The operation also involves two specialized vessels and an emergency helicopter.

The Spanish coastguard has not yet provided further updates regarding the ongoing search.

Analysis: Ongoing Search for British Passenger off Tenerife

The incident involving a 76-year-old British man who went overboard from the TUI Marella Explorer 2 highlights the challenges of maritime rescue operations. Despite immediate action by the ship’s crew and local authorities, the passenger has not yet been located. The search continues under difficult conditions approximately 16 nautical miles from Punta de Teno.

Spanish authorities and the TUI Group have coordinated extensive efforts, including specialized vessels, aerial support, and onboard investigation protocols. The age of the passenger is a critical factor, influencing both the urgency and methods of the search operation.

At this stage, the circumstances of the fall remain unclear, and no further updates have been provided by the Spanish coastguard. The situation underscores the importance of rapid response in maritime emergencies and the reliance on both crew protocols and local rescue services to increase the chances of a successful recovery.
