An aircraft experienced a crash after a 3D-printed component failed, causing the engine to lose power, according to an official report. The Cozy Mk IV light plane was destroyed when a plastic air induction elbow, purchased at a North American air show, gave way.
The incident occurred at Gloucestershire Airport in Staverton on 18 March at 13:04 GMT, when the engine lost power and the plane struck a landing aid system. The pilot, who was the only person on board, sustained minor injuries and was hospitalized.
The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) determined that the induction elbow was made from an unsuitable material. The agency indicated that new safety measures will be implemented in the future concerning 3D-printed aircraft components.
During a routine local flight, the pilot advanced the throttle on final approach and found that the engine had completely lost power. He managed to navigate over a road and some bushes at the edge of the airfield but landed short, hitting the instrument landing system before stopping beside it.
Investigation revealed that the 3D-printed part had been installed as part of a fuel system modification. The plastic softened from engine heat, leading to its collapse.
The Light Aircraft Association (LAA) announced plans to issue a safety alert about 3D-printed parts, which will be distributed to inspectors to prevent similar accidents in the future.
Commentary: The Risks of 3D-Printed Components in Aviation
The recent crash of a Cozy Mk IV light plane, attributed to the failure of a 3D-printed component, highlights a critical gap in the safety of modern aircraft technology. A plastic air induction elbow, purchased from a North American air show, collapsed after succumbing to engine heat, causing a loss of power and resulting in the plane's crash. This incident serves as a stark reminder that not all materials used in aviation are suitable for the harsh conditions faced by aircraft systems.
Investigations by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) revealed that the plastic used in the 3D-printed part was inadequate, softening under the engine's heat and leading to its failure. While 3D printing has proven to be a revolutionary tool in manufacturing, its application in aviation requires stringent oversight and material standards. The AAIB's findings point to the need for more rigorous testing and regulation of 3D-printed parts, particularly those involved in critical engine components.
In response to the incident, the Light Aircraft Association (LAA) is taking proactive measures by issuing a safety alert to prevent similar accidents. This alert, aimed at inspectors, will emphasize the risks of using 3D-printed components without proper validation. The crash at Gloucestershire Airport on 18 March underscores the importance of ongoing safety evaluations in the face of rapidly evolving technologies in the aviation sector.
This accident could be seen as a turning point for the industry, which will likely reconsider the use of 3D-printed materials in certain critical systems. While the technology holds promise, this tragic event serves as a warning: innovation must not come at the cost of safety, particularly when human lives are at stake.
