Iraq, despite its abundant oil reserves, continues to struggle with energy security. Authorities reported that two drones attacked the Khor Mor gas field in northern Iraqs Kurdistan Region, more than a week after the incident on November 26.

The Khor Mor facility is a crucial source of electricity for the Kurdistan Region. The assault came just after US officials met with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Minister of Electricity, and shortly before the inauguration of the expanded US consulate in Erbil.

Iranian-backed militias, who have previously targeted the site, are suspected of carrying out the attack. The strike occurred at a time when the KRG had recently increased electricity production, providing full-day power to many areas that had relied on private generators.

The region faces persistent budgetary pressures from Baghdad and political interference from Iran, despite reopening a pipeline to Turkey and restoring oil export revenue. The attack followed Iraqs recent elections, which saw pro-Iranian politicians seeking greater influence in the central government.

Rudaw reported that the Iraqi government confirmed the Khor Mor assault involved two drones and announced plans to deploy air-defense systems in coordination with Erbil. Authorities stated that the attackers have been identified and described the incident as heinous and cowardly.

Sabah al-Numan, spokesperson for Iraqs Commander in Chief, said Baghdad is working with the KRG to safeguard the site. Recommendations from a federal committee have led to orders for air-defense deployment at Khor Mor.

The US has pledged support for the KRG, though details remain unclear. Dana Gas, the facilitys main operator, stated that production has resumed to normal levels with enhanced security measures implemented by both Kurdish and federal authorities.

Numan confirmed that legal actions are underway against the attackers, with arrest warrants issued and security forces actively pursuing them. Baghdad plans additional measures, including repositioning troops in the East Salahaddin sector, replacing commanders with more capable leadership, and improving intelligence coordination with the KRG.

The Iraqi government emphasized that the attack is intended to disrupt security and economic stability but vowed to hold all perpetrators accountable. Ensuring the execution of these promises remains a critical challenge for Baghdad.

Analysis: Iraq's Ongoing Struggles with Energy Security and Political Turmoil

The recent drone attack on the Khor Mor gas field highlights the deep vulnerabilities Iraq faces in terms of energy security, despite its vast oil reserves. This strategic site, vital for electricity production in the Kurdistan Region, has now become a recurring target of attacks. The incident underscores the broader instability affecting Iraq’s energy infrastructure, which directly impacts the daily lives of its citizens, particularly in regions heavily reliant on power from state-controlled facilities.

Notably, this attack comes at a time when the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) had made significant strides toward boosting local energy production, offering full-day electricity to areas previously dependent on private generators. While these efforts are a positive step toward improving energy reliability, they remain fragile in the face of external political and military pressures. The role of Iranian-backed militias, suspected of executing the attack, adds an additional layer of complexity. These groups' influence on Iraq’s internal affairs, particularly in the context of the country's recent elections, cannot be ignored.

The Khor Mor assault also highlights the interconnectedness of Iraq's political and security issues. The attack's timing, just after discussions between US officials and KRG representatives, and the inauguration of the expanded US consulate, suggests that this assault may be more than just an attempt to disrupt power infrastructure. It could be a signal of regional powers' influence, especially with Iran's growing role in the Iraqi government and their ability to target critical infrastructure in areas they deem strategically important.

While the Iraqi government has promised to take action by deploying air-defense systems and enhancing security measures, the real test lies in whether these promises are fulfilled. The country's history of political fragmentation, coupled with external interference, has often led to delayed or ineffective responses. Ensuring the long-term security of vital infrastructure like Khor Mor is not just a matter of defense but also a reflection of Iraq's broader political and governance challenges.

The outcome of these security measures will be closely watched. The ability of Iraq's leadership to secure the country’s energy infrastructure, navigate complex political dynamics, and restore public confidence will determine whether the recent attacks are an isolated incident or a sign of deeper, ongoing instability.
