Cabinet approves plans for fire training centre

The local council has granted approval for a major project that includes a new firefighter training centre, a highways depot, and a care home near a key motorway junction. Gloucestershire County Council has allocated 46.7 million for the initiative, which involves reclaiming 27 acres of land from a tenanted farm adjacent to the A4019 in Coombe Hill.

Officials highlighted that the site, located near junction 10 of the M5, is ideally situated to serve Gloucesters busiest districts and enjoys excellent transport connections to the city and surrounding areas. The project will also feature a residential development, with 24 homes planned for sale to help finance the overall scheme.

Once planning permission is approved, 75 acres of the farm will remain under tenancy. A council report noted: "Its strategic accessibility will be further enhanced upon completion of the works to J10 of the M5. A capital receipt is expected from the sale of land for housing, which will help reduce the councils borrowing costs for delivering these projects."

Paul Hodgkinson, cabinet member overseeing Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service, expressed strong support for the plans. He emphasized the importance of the councils investment in improving the fire service. "Currently, training takes place at multiple locations, but this project will consolidate everything into a single, purpose-built venue for Gloucestershire firefighters," he said. "Its an exciting development, linked to other new initiatives at the same site, and represents positive news for both the fire service and the wider community."
