A critically endangered lemur species has been welcomed at Jersey's Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, marking it as only the tenth wildlife facility worldwide to house this unique animal. The three-year-old male greater bamboo lemur, named Orsa, arrived from Cotswold Wildlife Park.

The zoo has been chosen as a key site to protect and potentially breed this rare species. Georgia Gotts, deputy curator of mammals at Jersey Zoo, described the lemurs as "rockstars of the lemur world," noting their rarity, distinctive personalities, and universal appeal. She expressed that the team was "thrilled" about Orsas arrival.

Plans are underway to introduce Orsa to two female greater bamboo lemurs and a young male in the coming month. Once thought extinct, the species was rediscovered in the 1960s and is now considered highly rare, with only around 1,500 individuals remaining in the wild.

The trust highlighted that fossil records indicate greater bamboo lemurs were once the most widespread lemur species, with approximately one million roaming Madagascar 90,000 years ago. Despite their similarity to other bamboo lemurs, such as the Alaotran gentle lemurs also cared for at Jersey Zoo, greater bamboo lemurs are more closely related to ring-tailed lemurs.

Orsa is expected to be on public display at the zoo in the coming weeks.

Analysis: Significance of Orsa’s Arrival for Species Conservation

From my perspective as the author of this update, the arrival of Orsa at Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust represents a concrete step in international efforts to safeguard the greater bamboo lemur. Being only the tenth institution globally to house this species underscores the strategic role assigned to Jersey Zoo in conservation planning.

The facts surrounding this species remain stark. With an estimated 1,500 individuals left in the wild, the greater bamboo lemur is classified as critically endangered. Its transfer from Cotswold Wildlife Park was not symbolic but operational, aimed at strengthening managed breeding and long-term population stability.

Planned introductions to two adult females and a young male reflect standard conservation breeding protocols rather than exhibition priorities. Historical data cited by the trust, including fossil evidence of a once widespread population in Madagascar, provides important context for how dramatically numbers have declined.

Orsa’s expected public display does not change the primary objective: conservation. The presence of this species at Jersey Zoo is best understood as part of a coordinated global response to prevent extinction through controlled care, research, and potential breeding success.
