A unique advent calendar constructed from 24 shipping containers has been unveiled by a self-storage company in Chorley, Lancashire, featuring thousands of presents for local children. Cuboid Self Storage claims the installation, standing 34ft (10.3m) tall and 48ft (14.6m) wide, ranks among the world's largest advent calendars.
Throughout December, a different container will be given to a local charity each day as part of the Cash For Kids Mission Christmas initiative. Chris Hickman from Cuboid explained, We carefully select the charities we support to ensure the gifts reach the heart of the community.
The 20ft (6.1m) deep containers hold approximately 7,500 gifts. The first set of donations was given to Inspire Youth Zone in Chorley. Jenny Taylor from the charity described the gesture as absolutely amazing
, receiving around 200 gifts for children, along with additional items for family meal events.
Taylor added, There was a wide variety for us. Finding toys for young children is usually easy, but sourcing presents for teenagers can be a real challenge.
Cuboid Self Storage is collaborating with the Cash For Kids foundation to organize and distribute the gifts. Eve Wane-Smith from the foundation highlighted the growing need: Last year, Mission Christmas Lancashire supported 9,000 children. This year, we have already received 16,000 applications.
She noted that local communities in Lancashire are contributing generously to meet the demand, expressing gratitude for the support. Hickman emphasized, We want to assist as many people as possible. Every child deserves to wake up with a gift on Christmas morning.
Analysis: A Unique Initiative in Chorley Aims to Bring Holiday Joy to Children in Need
The advent calendar, created from 24 shipping containers by Cuboid Self Storage, stands as a remarkable example of community involvement and corporate social responsibility. As one of the largest advent calendars in the world, this installation goes beyond holiday cheer, contributing significantly to local charities and families in need. The self-storage company’s collaboration with the Cash For Kids Mission Christmas initiative highlights the growing importance of addressing regional poverty, especially during the holiday season.
With each container holding around 7,500 gifts and a new donation made daily, the project targets children across Chorley and the wider Lancashire area, where the demand for assistance is steadily increasing. As Eve Wane-Smith of Cash For Kids points out, the charity already faces a steep rise in applications, from 9,000 children last year to 16,000 this year. This underscores the essential role such initiatives play in supporting local communities, especially in times of economic hardship.
What stands out about this project is the careful selection of charities to ensure the gifts are reaching those who need them the most. Chris Hickman’s statement that "every child deserves to wake up with a gift on Christmas morning" reflects the core philosophy behind this initiative, which transcends the act of giving presents—it fosters hope, warmth, and connection within the community.
