The room buzzed with excitement as Tiniya Dixon, a public programs coordinator at Mobius Discovery Center, asked third-graders to identify a strong odor circulating through the space. Some students covered their noses in surprise, while others watched with growing curiosity as Dixon handed out trays containing the source of the smell: a collection of small squids.
On Tuesday, Westview Elementary's third-grade class, led by teacher Tiffiny Santos, embarked on a science-focused field trip at Mobius, culminating in a hands-on squid dissection. "Reading about it is one thing, but touching it is an entirely different experience; theyll remember it forever," Santos noted.
For about an hour, Dixon guided the students through the anatomy of the squids, demonstrating how to carefully remove a tentacle, examine the mandible, and gently probe the creatures large, cloudy eye. This activity marked the conclusion of the students unit on the ocean, which included lessons on SCUBA pioneer Jacques Cousteau and a live video session with a shark-tagging oceanologist.
Santos hopes the immersive experience will spark interest in STEMscience, technology, engineering, and math. "Handling a squid gives them a chance to experience science firsthand, and it might inspire them to explore biology or other sciences in the future," she said.
Beyond learning about anatomy, the field trip emphasized overcoming fears. Eight-year-old Jazmine McKinnon admitted that handling a squid was far outside her comfort zone. "I was like, 'What?' Ive never done anything like this before," she said. Though initially disgusted and hesitant, Jazmine participated, cutting a tentacle with her partner and reassuring herself that it was safe because the squid was already dead.
Rylie Lynn, another student, initially shared her classmates apprehension but found the dissection more intriguing than expected. She and her partner discovered the squid's "pen," a straw-like cartilage linked to its ink sac, and even used the ink for drawing. "It wasnt that scary once I started," Rylie reflected. The experience also sparked her curiosity about possible careers involving marine life. "I might want to explore animals that no one has seen before," she said.
Even for students like Jazmine, who remain less drawn to animals, the trip encouraged stepping beyond personal limits. She mentioned feeling more confident about trying new experiences, such as swimming in deeper waters. Santos emphasized the broader lesson: "This gives them a chance to try something they think they cant do, engage in science, and realize they can succeed. Theres so much growth in just one day."
Author’s Analysis: Hands-On Learning Sparks Curiosity
The field trip to Mobius Discovery Center highlights the impact of experiential learning in science education. By engaging directly with squids, students move beyond textbook knowledge and gain a tactile understanding of anatomy and marine biology.
Teacher Tiffiny Santos and coordinator Tiniya Dixon created an environment where curiosity meets guided exploration. Students not only learned about squid anatomy but also overcame initial discomfort, demonstrating the value of experiential challenges in building confidence.
Observations from students like Jazmine McKinnon and Rylie Lynn show that hands-on activities can spark interest in STEM and inspire consideration of future careers in science. The experience underlines a broader educational principle: real-world engagement fosters both knowledge and personal growth.
In short, immersive field trips such as this one provide measurable benefits—strengthening scientific understanding, encouraging risk-taking in learning, and igniting a lasting curiosity about the natural world.
