BEIJING (Reuters) Chinese automaker BYD is set to recall 88,981 plug-in hybrid vehicles immediately due to safety concerns related to their power batteries, according to the market regulator on Friday.
The recall affects Qin PLUS DM-i models manufactured from January 2021 to September 2023. The regulator noted that these vehicles "might experience reduced power performance caused by inconsistencies in the production of power battery packs." In severe situations, the vehicles may be unable to operate in fully electric mode.
The decision for this recall follows a defect investigation conducted by the market regulator.

BYD Announces Recall of Over 88,000 Hybrid Vehicles Due to Battery Issues
The recall of 88,981 plug-in hybrid vehicles by Chinese automaker BYD is a direct response to safety concerns identified by the market regulator. This decision affects Qin PLUS DM-i models manufactured between January 2021 and September 2023, which are equipped with potentially faulty power battery packs. According to the regulator, these defects may cause a decrease in the vehicle's power performance and, in some cases, prevent the vehicles from operating in fully electric mode. Such issues raise significant safety concerns, especially for hybrid models designed for both electric and gasoline use.
The recall follows an investigation by the market regulator, which found inconsistencies in the production of these power battery packs. While the defect does not necessarily pose an immediate risk to drivers, it could impact the overall driving experience and lead to a loss of efficiency, which is critical for hybrid vehicles. The recall decision highlights the need for strict quality control measures in the automotive industry, particularly for electric and hybrid vehicles, which depend heavily on their battery systems for performance and safety.
BYD has responded to the recall by urging affected vehicle owners to bring their cars to the nearest service centers for necessary repairs. The company has not yet specified the duration of the recall process or the exact nature of the fix, but customers are expected to receive further details shortly. This move underscores the importance of manufacturers prioritizing safety and acting swiftly when defects are identified. While recalls are a standard practice in the automotive industry, the scale and potential impact on vehicle performance make this a significant event in the world of electric and hybrid cars.
