The long-hidden tomb of Saint Peter, situated in the Vatican Necropolis, is set to be revealed on film for the very first time in history. The documentary, which centers on the discovery of the Apostles burial site, will feature actor Chris Pratt as its host.
Filming is currently underway at St. Peters Basilica and the Vatican Necropolis, the ancient burial ground beneath Vatican City. The production is a collaboration between Vatican Media, the Fabbrica di San Pietroa Catholic institution responsible for preserving St. Peters Basilicaand Spains AF Films. The documentary has not yet received a title.
Chris Pratt will guide viewers through the story of Saint Peter, explaining the historical and spiritual significance of the Apostle. Spanish filmmaker Paula Ortiz is directing, with the script by Andrea Tornielli and consultation from Vatican scholar Pietro Zande. The project is scheduled for release in 2026, marking the 400th anniversary of the dedication of the current St. Peters Basilica, inaugurated on November 18, 1626.
Pratt said, It is an extraordinary honor to collaborate with the Vatican on this project. Saint Peters life is central to Christian history, and I am grateful for the trust given to share his legacy with the world.
The Basilicas history is closely linked to Peter, the Galilean fisherman appointed by Jesus to lead the early Church, who was martyred in Rome on Vatican Hill in 64 AD. His burial site quickly became a place of devotion, attracting many early Christians who wished to be interred nearby.
The documentary promises an immersive journey, showcasing never-before-seen footage and taking viewers step by step through the discovery of Peters tomb. Emperor Constantine preserved the burial site when constructing the first large Basilica on Vatican Hill, integrating it into the buildings foundations.
Using historical records and archaeological findings, the film traces the identification of Peters burial location in the Vatican Necropolis, first officially recognized by Pope Pius XII in 1950. Further research led Pope Paul VI to confirm in 1968 that the Apostles remains had been located. The relics of Peter, the Pontiff declared, have been identified in a way that we can consider convincing We have reason to believe that the few, but sacrosanct, mortal remains of the Prince of the Apostles have been found.
