A man has been sentenced to prison after fatally stabbing another man in the heart of Canterbury. Mohammed Hgar, 32, pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of 23-year-old Samare Gerezgihir following a knife attack on 11 October 2024.

At Canterbury Crown Court on Thursday, the judge sentenced Hgar, who has no fixed address, to nine years behind bars.

The incident occurred at approximately 23:30 BST on High Street, where Hgar stabbed his victim in the chest. After the attack, Hgar reportedly took a taxi to Herne Bay. Samare Gerezgihir died shortly after the assault, and Hgar was arrested by 05:00 the next morning.

Investigators noted that CCTV footage captured Hgar interacting with a group of men in the city centre shortly before the stabbing. Police believe that Hgar and his victim were previously acquainted and involved in an ongoing dispute. Hgar has not revealed a clear motive for the attack.

Detective Inspector Colin McKeen stated that the sentence highlights the seriousness of the attack and underscores the dangers of carrying a knife. He added, "It is my hope that this outcome brings a measure of justice and closure to those affected by this tragic event."

Initially, Kent Police had charged Hgar and another man, Kemal Ibrahim, with murder and possession of a bladed weapon in a public place. Both denied the charges, and Ibrahim was later acquitted due to lack of evidence.

Analysis: The Fatal Stabbing in Canterbury

The recent sentencing of Mohammed Hgar to nine years in prison for the manslaughter of Samare Gerezgihir serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of violent actions and the dangers of carrying weapons. This case, which unfolded on the night of October 11, 2024, highlights the tragic results of an ongoing dispute between two individuals. Despite the severity of the crime, the lack of a clear motive for the stabbing complicates the public's understanding of the circumstances leading to such violence.

Hgar’s guilty plea to manslaughter, rather than murder, underscores the complexity of legal determinations in violent crimes. It reflects the challenges in proving intent and motive in cases where both parties are known to each other and involved in a conflict. The investigation, including the crucial CCTV footage, reveals a chaotic and troubling sequence of events: a deadly altercation followed by a calm taxi ride, suggesting a disturbing detachment from the violence that had just occurred.

While the nine-year sentence may appear to be a significant punishment, it also raises questions about the adequacy of sentences for crimes involving knives. In his statement, Detective Inspector Colin McKeen emphasized the gravity of carrying a blade, yet the shorter sentence may not seem sufficient given the loss of life. This case therefore also contributes to the ongoing conversation around sentencing for knife-related crimes in the UK, especially with regards to how the justice system handles offenders who plead guilty to lesser charges.
