Council to be requested to reject Adlington new town

Councillors are pressing their local authority to reject plans for a new town in Cheshire, sparking debates across the region. Adlington, located in the northern part of the county, is among 12 sites under government consideration for a new settlement that could include up to 20,000 homes.

The development proposal, submitted by a private developer, has prompted public protests and faced resistance from parish and town councils, as well as the area's Member of Parliament.

Both Labour and Conservative councillors have tabled motions asking Cheshire East Council to formally oppose the project. These motions will be reviewed during the councils full meeting on Wednesday.

The first motion, presented by Labour councillor Fiona Wilson of Macclesfield South, requests the council reject the current Adlington proposals and urges the leadership to notify the government of its stance. Similarly, Conservative councillor Mike Sewart from Poynton West and Adlington has submitted a motion seeking to communicate the councils opposition to the government.

Earlier, it was revealed that the councils leader and deputy had written to the New Towns Task Force in June to reaffirm support for potential new town developments. The council clarified that this correspondence acknowledged the possible role of new towns in addressing housing needs but did not constitute unconditional approval.

Strategic economic assessments are ongoing for all 12 proposed locations, with final government decisions expected next year. The full council discussion on the Adlington motions is scheduled for Wednesday, 10 December.

The government plans to release additional details about the new town proposals in the spring.
